AVS Milestones

AVS Workgroup, short for Audio and Video Coding Standard Workgroup of China was authorized to be established by the Science and Technology Department under the former Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of People’s Republic of China in June, 2002. Then the exploration of the standard of audio and video coding was started. After years of effort by nearly thousands of people, AVS-P2 was promulgated as the Chinese national standard with Standard No. GB/T 20090.2-2006.

Chinese national standard “General Specification for Digital Terrestrial Set-Top Box” (GB/T 26683-2011) and “General Specification for Digital Terrestrial Television Receiver” (GB/T 26686-2011) were published and implemented in 2011. The digital terrestrial set-top box and television receiver were required to support AVS video decoding.

On March 18, 2012, in order to satisfy the needs of the development of new business in radio film and television industry such as high definition TV and 3D TV, promote the industrialization and application of independent innovation technologies, promote the development of national enterprises in our country, and promote the application of independent innovation of AVS national standards in the new business of radio and television, Science and Technology Division of SARFT and Electronic Information Division of MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) jointly set up a joint promotion workgroup of AVS technology application. The two chiefs served as joint leader. CCTV Chief Engineer Wenhua Ding and AVS workgroup leader, Peking University Academician Wen Gao serves as the joint leader of the expert group. Since the promotion workgroup’s establishment, the two ministries have been closely cooperating with each other and relying on the joint workgroup to organize all the parties to develop the AVS+, an optimized and evolved technology and created a complete AVS+ industrial chain from the chip, front-end equipment, receiving terminal to the application system.

The SARFT formally published the industry standard “Advanced Coding of Video and Audio for Broadcasting and Television Part 1: Video” on July 10, 2012. The standard number is GY/T 257.1-2012, referred to as AVS+ for immediate implementation. AVS+ made high-definition television application as the breakthrough point, took full advantage of the critical period of the digital television from SD to HD rapid development to promote the industrialization and application of AVS+ standards. Since then, independent intellectual property rights AVS+ standard industrial application came to the fast lane.

On December 2012, the three parts, AVS system, compliance testing and reference software, were published as the national standards to further improve the AVS standard system.

AVS+-based 3D programs were broadcast on the star on March 18, 2013. On the same day, the completion ceremony of the construction of the Havana digital television demonstration area was held in Havana, the Capital of Cuba. The digital TV using China’s AVS standard formally settled in Cuba. Earlier, China’s AVS standards have landed in Sri Lanka, Laos, Thailand and Kyrgyzstan and other countries.

The SARFT issued AVS2 as the industry standard in May 2016.
