What is AVS
AVS Workgroup, short for Audio and Video Coding Standard
Workgroup of China was authorized to be established by the
Science and Technology Department under the former Ministry
of Industry and Information Technology of People¡¯s Republic
of China in June, 2002. With the mandate of satisfying the
demands from the rapidly growing information industry, AVS
is committed to producing technical standards of high
quality for compression, decompression, processing, and
representation of digital audio and video, and thus
providing the digital audio-video equipments and systems
with high-efficient and economical coding/decoding
technologies. AVS can be applied in wide variety of
significant information sectors including high-resolution
digital broadcast, high-density laser-digital storage media,
wireless broad-band multimedia communication and internet
broad-band stream media.
AVS is one of the second generation of source
coding/decoding standards and own independent Chinese
intellectual property rights. Source coding technology
primarily addresses the problem of coding and compressing
audio& video mass data viz. initial data and original
sources, hence known as digital video and audio coding
technology, and it is the premise of the subsequent digital
transmission, storage and broadcast and serves as the common
standard for digital video& audio industry.
AVS completed the standardization work of AVS1.0 series
standards including P2-video which was approved as Chinese
national standard on February 22, 2006 and came into effect
on March 1, 2006 after some four years of strenuous
standardization work since 2002 by approximately one
thousand experts representing 150 AVS member bodies from
enterprises and academia. P1-System, P3-Audio, P6-DRM and
other parts of AVS1.0 all have been moved on the stage of
FDS (Final Draft of Standard). The detailed description of
each part is archived on AVS ftp.
AVS launched the work on AVS2.0 at the end of 2008.

Three major characteristics of AVS:
1. Advanced¡ªAVS is initiated by China and it is technically
advanced as one of the second generation source coding
standards.
2. Independent¡ªAVS keeps ahead of its international
counterparts in Patent Pool management Program, and
established a set of integrated standard workgroup legal
document.
3. Open¡ªAVS standardization work is internationally open.
